<td width="100%">
Still life had a heyday in 17th and 18th centuries. The economic upswing in the Dutch Republic, fueled by sea trade, created a demand for wall decorations in the fine homes of prosperous merchants. So many still life painters were working that they specialized in various sub-genres, such as the kitchen or market still life, the vanitas, fruit and food, trompe l'oeil, and the especially popular flower paintings, such as the example by Rachel Ruysch at right. The Dutch still life was a depiction of the nation's prosperity, with the world's riches scattered sumptuously across the traditional table-top space.
