(Disneyland, 1955-1989) An original Disneyland bench, gifted to Ralph Hanson upon his retirement after 32 years. Ralph was noted for taking his breaks backstage on the east side of Main Street USA, sitting on one of two benches outside the security office behind Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln. With his “trademark” cup of coffee, he’d greet and chat with the Cast Members passing by. His retirement party was held at the Tahitian Terrace on September 21, 1989, with Disneyland President Ron Dominguez and Vice Presidents John Cora and Bob Gault attending. As a final gift, Gault announced they were giving him a gift that “probably knows a part of his anatomy better than Ralph’s wife does,” and unveiled the very bench Ralph used. This bench is one of the original benches seen in the Park on opening day, July 17th, 1955. It was removed from behind the Opera House on the east side of Main Street. In the 1970s, benches around the Hub were painted blue and white, in this style. This bench may have been moved from the Hub to backstage, or simply painted at the same time. The bench measures 95.75” wide x 19” deep x 29” tall, is made of wrought iron and wood, and has been painted brown since the removal from the Park, though in spots the original blue paint shows through. The bench is in very good condition, with wear from Park use, age, and the elements. The back and underside of the wood show much wear and peeling to the (non-original) brown paint.
