<B>An Italian Bronze Figural Group of Farnese Bull<BR></B></I><BR>After M. Amodio, late 19th century<BR>Bronze with brown patina<BR>18 1/2 x 14 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches approximately (35.6 x 35.6 cm)<BR><BR> The original marble was found in 1546 at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome during excavations commissioned by Pope Paul III. The figural group represents the myth of Dirce, who was tied to a wild bull by the sons of Antiope, Zeto and Amphion, who wanted to punish her for the ill-treatment inflicted on their mother, the first wife of Lykos, King of Thebes.
