An Interrupted Duel by Philip R. Goodwin
Presented in this lot is a lithograph titled, "An Interrupted Duel" by Philip Goodwin, circa 1920s-1930s, Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, Minn., framed. Philip R. Goodwin (1881-1935) was an American painter and illustrator who specialized in depictions of wildlife, the outdoors, fishing, hunting and the Old American West. He provided illustrations for numerous books and magazines, as well as for commercial items, such as posters, advertisements and calendars. He is perhaps best known for illustrating Jack London's The Call of the Wild and for providing the cover art for many issues of Outdoor Recreation / Outdoor Life Magazine during the 1920s and early 1930s. Well educated in fine art and illustration, Goodwin had an especial love for his subject matter, which was almost exclusively Western outdoor scenes with cowboys and Indians, wildlife, hunting and fishing. For almost thirty years, many of Goodwin’s finest paintings first appeared on Brown & Bigelow calendars which could be found in almost every home in America. This lithograph is mounted in a what appears to be it's original matted wood frame. The lithograph is in amazingly preserved condition, no marring observed. The black stained frame exhibits scuffing on the edges, no other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 9"W x 13.25"L, frame is 15.5"W x 19.5"L approximately.*
