An Interesting Lot of Three Mesopotamian Terracotta
The first is a Bust of Ishtar, Goddess of War and Sexual Love Ishtar was the daughter of Sin or Anu, courtesan of the gods, known as the Mother of the Fruitful Breast. She was the Akkadian counterpart of the West Semitic goddess Astarte. This piece is most likely from the Assyrian cities of Nineveh or Arbela. A discreet necklace shows at the neck. Circa 2nd millenium BCE. 3-1/2" (9cm).

The second is a wonderful Toy Bird Rattle. This wonderful toy with distinctive eyes still rattles! The Assyrians lived between two rivers in Mesopotamia and many relics were found in tombs as they surrounded their burial sites with familiar objects. Perhaps this piece belonged to a beloved child as it survived in such good condition. Circa 5th c.BCE Dimension: 3" (7.5cm)

The third is a Male Face of Qumbaba (Kumbaba) mentioned in the Old Testament, a baked terracotta piece from ancient Mesopotamia, 2nd millennium BCE. 3” (7.5cm).

Provenance: All three pieces from an old French collection; purchased at Drouot in the 70’s.
