An Igorot war shield from Luzon in the Philippines. An especially good example of this type of shield with great patina. Carved from a single piece of wood and bound with rattan. The cut out V shape on the bottom of the shield wassaid to be used to hold an enemies head to the ground before taking it off while the two cut outs on top were for parrying. Headhunting was still practiced in this area until at least the 1960’s. Late 19th-early 20th century. Great condition,wear from use, rattan 100% intact. Measures 40 ½” tall and 12” wide.
