(Edison Manufacturing Company, 1903) An Improved Exhibition Model Edison Projecting Kinetoscope. Thomas Edison’s vision to “do for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear” led to the Kinetoscope, based largely on the work of his assistant William Dickson. To project 35mm film, the reel is loaded into the front box and runs through the gate, as powerful light from the lamphouse illuminates and enlarges the picture. This Kinetoscope includes a second original box for the film reel and a modern replacement handle. This vital piece of film history, bearing the serial number 12230, led to the modern projector and cinema as we know it. Measuring 48” x 23” x 61.5” tall, the kinetoscope is in good condition with heavy oxidation from age, scratches, scuffs, material loss, a crack in the handle, and wear from use. It is missing a transparency slide and rods to create the arclight. Due to size and weight, special shipping arrangements are required. Please inquire before bidding.
