Currency:USD Category:Antiquities Start Price:800.00 USD Estimated At:1,000.00 - 1,200.00 USD
An Ancient Thai Ban Chiang Vessel
Thailand, ca. 3000 BCE. Characteristic buff surface with red-lined design, this piece has a high waist with wide mouth, flaring lip, ribbed waist, body painted in slightly curved, narrow vertical lines in red melon forms with curved lines decorating the foot. The wave pattern on the bottom shows it was made by the Bann Puuluu people who inhabit a more southerly region towards the Mekong from Ban Chiang (all lived in NE Thailand in the same period). These are normally more expensive and sought after than the normal Ban Chiang. They were excavated by the Swedes and other Scandinavians. 11-1/2”H (29cm)

Provenance: Purchased at Sotheby’s Arcade Auctions in New York #157/1390 (original tag included)
