<B>An American Silver Eglantine Soup Tureen</B></I><BR>Mark of Gorham, Providence, RI, c.1893<BR><BR>The rectangular form five-quart tureen, supported on a foot with a shell shape at each corner and acanthus leaf decoration in between, a gadroon border separates the foot from the body, the shoulder of the body undulates with a repouss chased decoration of roses, the everted lip has repouss decoration of shells and scrolls, the body of the tureen centered between two scroll handles each with a stylized shell to the center, the interior of the body and lid with a gilt wash; the lid decorated with four panels at the corners of acanthus leaf scrolls and a knop finial; total weight 107 troy ounces, hallmark stamped underside with model number <I>3803</B></I> and engraved with <I>Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo</B></I><BR>11.2in. high x 16in. long<BR><BR>Provenance: Owned by Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo, a commanding presence in the history of New York society; her mansion, a five-story French Renaissance Revival palace completed in 1898, at the corner of Madison Avenue and Seventy-second Street, now the flagship store of Ralph Lauren.2 Items <BR><BR><B>Condition Report:</B> Normal signs of wear as appropriate with age <BR>
