An Aesthetic movement stained beech folding chair, by James Shoolbred & Co., designed in the manner of E.W. Godwin, the slightly curved back, with chinoiserie lattice flanked by incised square uprights with pointed finials, the rush seat above folding curved square section legs, stamped marks 80cm high Note: Versions of this chair have been attributed to the manufacturer William Watt who executed many of Godwins' designs. Godwins 'Old English' or 'Jacobean' chair of 1867, based on earlier Sheraton and Regency traditions, was much copied by other manufacturers, in particular the example by Collier and Plucknett of Warwick. This chair by Shoolbred & Co. takes elements from the 'Old English' design and adds the folding 'steamer chair' feature, the construction of which resembles other attributed examples.
