2pp, 8" x 10.75", on letterhead of the Mohawk Ranch Company, Mammoth, AZ, 28 Aug. 1892. Addressed to R. Paul, U.S. Marshall in Tucson. Letter reads, in part: Our store was robed last night of checks & money & among the amount taken was $135.00 Government Money belonging to the Post Office. As this part of the crime possibly comes under your jurisdiction we thought it best to write to you at once. They mention that they have a suspect in mind, and If you could send a man who could play the cowboy role with this fellow. We have no doubt our man will be in your hands in a few days. We have no one here to prevent the man from leaving & therefore think prompt action will be needed.

Robert Havlin Paul (1830-1901) was reportedly a fearless and able detective. Born in Lowell, MA, his first position was as a cabin boy on a whaler at the age of 12. By the age of 19 he made his way to California, where he served in various law enforcement roles, including Wells Fargo agent, for the next 30 years. He was sent to Arizona in 1878, and elected sheriff of Pima County in 1881. He went to Colorado to bring the Earps back in 1882, but was unsuccessful in locating them. He became a special officer for the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1889, and a U.S. Marshal in 1891. He retired four years later, a career spanning nearly half a century.
