U.S. Pattern 1832 General & Staff Officer's Sword, in scabbard, by Ames, 31'' blade, 38'' overall, based on an English pattern. This sword remained a standard weapon for these officers until 1850 when regulations were changed and staff officers were required to wear the staff & field officer's saber. Technically it remained the regulation for the General Officers until 1872 and was the main sword worn by flag rank officers throughout the Civil War. Straight blade, double edged, with even taper to point; central fuller which terminates within 1'' of tip. Etched with floral sprays and a Federal eagle with a motto-bearing ribbon; additionally etched ''N.P. Ames, Cutler, Springfield'' to ricasso. Grips are found either with shell of silver over wood and incised to resemble wire wrapping, or as this example, wrapped with wire. Globular two-piece pommel with rounded knucklebow, which is flattened in the center and decorated in a beaded design. Straight quillions are decorated with eight-point star at each end. All metal parts of the hilt, except grip, are gilded brass. This scabbard is predominantly gilt brass as well, with small applied scroll bearing Ames inscription. Condition is fine with thinning to etched portions of blade. Wire wrap at grip may be non-factory. Scabbard shows minor dings and thinning to gold plate. Leather washer is intact. Est.: $1,800-$2,400.
