Americana: Patent Model Of A Double-Paneled Window With Moving Parts The actual Model submitted
Patent Model Of A Double-Paneled Window With Moving Parts The actual Model which was submitted to the U.S. Patent Office, probably in the late 1800s, for a Double-Paneled Window constructed in wood with some metal parts. The windows move by sliding up and down. The dimensions are as follows: length 11-1/2", width 5-1/2", height 11-1/2"; length of each of the two inset windows - 9-3/4", height 6-3/4", width 1-1/4". Windows can slide up and down over 4 inches. Patent models are unique to a brief period of American history, when U.S. patent law required that all inventors submit a scale model of their invention (which was to be no larger than 12 inches square) in order to be granted a U.S. Patent. With the recision of those laws in the late 1800s, models were no longer required, and the collections of the Patent Office's 19th century models were placed in storage until budget constraints eventually forced the government to dispose of them, pursuant to an act of Congress. It is unusual to find a Patent Model of an item as important as a window, and with moving parts.
