(Americana) Book, "Annals of the Troubles in the Netherlands, >From the Assession of Charles V, Emperor of Germany. In Four Parts. A Proper and Seasonable Mirror for the Present Americans", Volume 1, by Bernard Romans, printed by Watson and Goodwin for the author, Hartford, 1778, 160pp, original leather covers. Printed dedication page, "To His Excellency Jonathan Trumbull, Esq; Governor and Commander in Chief, in and over, The State of Connecticut...This Work is, (by Permission), Most humbly Dedicated." Signed on front endpaper, "Oliver Stoughtons Book 1797." Bernard Romans (ca. 1720-84) first traveled to America in 1757 as an agent for the British government. He pledged allegiance to the revolting colonies, was appointed a captain in the Colonial army, and was captured by the British in 1780. The present work was intended to reflect the similiarites between the American condition during the Revolutionary War and the state of Europe after the accession of Charles V. The second volume of this work was not published until 1782. Leather binding is in remarkably good condition, and fully intact. Bookplate mounted to inside front cover. Interior has average wear, overall VG. $500-750
