Extremely rare 1830's-1860's Old Paris porcelain portrait plaque. Museum quality. The painted detail in this piece is some of the finest around in miniature portrait painting .Beautifully hand painted, finely detailed portrait of a young gentleman, possibly a American subject, possibly a Washington D. C. Politician, bureaucrat . 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson had a engraving done of himself in the same pose. The man is dress in a fine black silk and satin suit. He is seated on an American Classical Federal/ Empire couch/sofa of Mahogany and black horsehair upholstery. Georgetown cabinetmaker William King Jr made similar sofa's for the Monroes White House. The couch has a gilt brass rosette on the arm. In the distant background through an open window, can be seen a view of a Greek Revival domed building, possibly the dome of the U.S. Capitol building .To the side is red & gold drapery. This item as was most Presidential White House china at this time could be custom ordered to be made in France from drawing, engravings or watercolors sent over. Measures 8" by 9" 1/2. On the left hand side the plaque has been a professional repair.
