American single-shot percussion dueling/target pistol, signed “S. Sutherland, Richmond, VA” in fancy script on barrel. Showing back action, late percussion lock, iron mounts, checkered half stock, German silver trim, approx. .52 caliber smoothbore with 10-1/8” barrel. 15-1/2” overall. Good quality with nicely engraved mounts, banded at breech. The barrel shows strong traces of original brown going to patina with some lightening at the edges, staining, and just beginning erosion and pinprick pitting. The lock, hammer, and breech show considerable case hardening within their natural patina, but some colors are visible. The varnish wood stock has good sharp checkering and is in very good condition with just a few minor bumps and mars in the varnish. The ramrod ferrule has been soldered long ago. The action is crisp, the ramrod is original to the period. A very well preserved and good condition pistol by a well-known Southern maker. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
