American percussion dueling/target pistol by J. E. Evans, Philadelphia. .52 caliber smoothbore, 10” octagon barrel of slightly heavy weight, 17” overall. The pistol shows nicely engraved mounts and lock, single set trigger, half stocked in good quality walnut with checkered grip. Silver barrel key escutcheons and plaques inlaid at wrist and butt. The barrel shows traces of original brown going to patina with some mottling, normal erosion, pinprick pitting. The lock shows a silvery grey patina and traces of case hardening. The markings are good, the metal is good. The stock is also in good condition with fairly sharp checkering, a few compressions, small scratches and losses in the varnish, normal aging, but generally good overall. The action is working. Evans had a particular style with the angle of his grip, which this pistol shows. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
