American percussion dueler/target pistol by Cooper of New York. Approx. 45 caliber smoothbore. 9-5/8” slightly heavyweight barrel, 16-3/8” overall, half stocked, engraved lock and iron mounts, double-gold banded at breech, in fair to good original condition. Old typed tag stuck on right side of barrel reads, “The Pistol of H. W. Anderson who killed R. M. Jones in a duel in 1837. Mr. Jones’ ball lodged in the muzzle of Mr. Anderson’s pistol.” This pistol shows the ball still lodged in the muzzle and was probably kept by Anderson as a keepsake. The pistol shows a dark-brown patina finish. Interestingly there is a dent on the right side of the muzzle, possibly from being dropped during the duel, and some dings along the edge. The stock is fair to good with some normal wear. There is a large loss of wood on left side of stock above barrel key. A sliver of wood approx. 1/4” by 3” long is missing, and shows being dropped. It is our theory the pistol was dropped when Jones’ ball hit the barrel. This gun could be in a museum as it is incredibly interesting. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
