American full-stock percussion “Kentucky” rifle with patchbox, German silver inlays, circa 1830’s to early 1850’s. The rifle measures 56-1/4” overall, with approx. 39-3/4” heavy octagon barrel of approx. .34 caliber 6- groove rifle. Stock shows natural striping and a dark finish with fancy sunburst, shield with scrolls. Sterling and German silver inlays on cheek piece. Several small spangle type inlays, large hand-plate in belly of forend. The stock is in good condition and shows considerable original varnish, some darkening, minor scratches, and the name “Jno Kroutpower” is period engraved in original plaque inlaid into the belly of the buttstock. The metal surfaces show a dark patina finish with light to moderate erosio and pinprick pitting and some heavier pitting on the lock. The lock markings are not legible. The rifle shows a large buckhorn rear sight and a blade and post type front sight. A late rifle that has an Ohio look with a pierced patchbox. Jonathan Kroutpower may be researchable.
