American flintlock pistol, lock signed W. Vaux and gold inlaid “Boston” on barrel. The pistol measures 13” overall with 6-1/4” heavy octagon barrel of .62 caliber smoothbore, measuring 1” across the flats. The pistol measures 13” overall, barrel approx. 6”. The barrel shows 50-60% original brown with some striping. The lock shows silvery case hardening drifting to a brown patina. The lock is in its original flintlock configuration with all original parts. The stock is plain walnut and good condition showing many small dings, mars, and scratches, and a brass and screw repair at wrist to repair break, which is done during period of use. The large fitted steel buttcap is nicely engraved as is the triggerguard. An original to the period brass-tipped ramrod is included. The unusual shape of this grip makes this pistol somewhat unique and it was a tremendous amount of work to custom make a buttcap to fit the unusual shape of this pistol. A unique design which could be used as a belt pistol, a dueling pistol, or for self defense. The pistol shows quality throughout and shows silver escutcheons around the barrel key. From the William R. Orbelo Collection. Est: $2,000 - $4,000
