American flintlock dueling pistol signed Goetz, Philadelphia .52caliber smooth bore 15-7/8” overall with 10” medium to slightly heavy weight octagon barrel. Single set trigger, wide gold band at breech, gold liner around touch hole, gold inlaid maker’s cartouche on barrel. The The wrist is nicely checkered, the barrel key escutcheons are silver and there is a silver shield-shaped plaque inlaid at top of wrist. The barrel shows light to heavy pitting over its entire surface. The lock also shows varying light to heavy pitting, not as bad as the barrel. The signature on lock is legible. The stock shows some even wear to the checkering. A large repair to the forend, where new wood was added, two inches of the forend were added on and slivers down each side of barrel extend about 5-3/4”. The repair work was done long ago, probably in its working life, by a good gunsmith who did not try to hide it; he just fixed the pistol. The triggerguard is heavily pitted. There are losses around the lock plate screws where there may have been escutcheons. The action is working. An original wood-tipped ramrod is retained. This pistol was well-used and the frizzen struck many times by the hammer showing a
