American flintlock dueling pistol converted to percussion by S. North of Middleton, CT. .54 caliber smoothbore, 10” barrel, 16” overall, half stocked in select walnut with checkered grip, browned and striped barrel, double gold banded and maker hallmarked at breech. Shows nicely engraved mounts and tang, single set trigger, double gold banded at breech. The pistol shows an American type good quality conversion with lightly engraved hammer, possibly done by North as it is good quality. S. North needs no introduction as he was Connecticut’s premier gun-maker whose products rivaled the best English arms of the early 19th century. His factory was visited by the President of the United States and Lafayette, and he was credited as the first gunmaker to substitute steel for iron in the production of gun barrels. He also was described as the first official pistol maker for the U.S. Government and his duelers are rare and desirable. The pistol also shows the word Connecticut nicely engraved on the barrel and the tang is exceptionally well engraved in semi relief in a floral design.
