American dueling pistol converted from Flintlock to percussion signed “Leehler” on barrel. .54 caliber smooth bore 9-3/8” heavy octagon barrel. 16-3/8” overall. Half stocked. Fancy checkered wrist, engraved iron mounts, adjustable set trigger, small plain silver inlays. The pistol shows a good quality conversion from flintlock to percussion and the hammer, lock, and added breech and mounts are engraved in same hand, indicating conversion by the original maker. The barrel shows a v-notch rear sight added to the breech area, with a brass post front sight added to the front dovetail that are original to the period. The barrel shows a dark brown patina with scattered light to moderate light rust and erosion and some light to moderate pitting. The lock shows a brown patina with traces of case hardening mixed in. The stock shows slight restorations with some refinishing and shows good checkering. The forend cap is a brown colored horn and may be an old replacement of the period. There is an oval silvery inlay in the butt that has been polished significantly and possibly an inscription removed. Also the escutcheons around the barrel key are plain silver as is the plaque inlaid at the wrist.
