The gun measures 52" overall, with 36" barrels, German silver banded at breech, wide flattened rib with hand engraving andinlay, and engraved London twist". The stock shows a German silver cap box with iron door and small engraved inlay to belly. The gun is half stocked with iron and German silver fittings. The stock shows some small breaks and repairs at the upper edge of each lock plate, otherwisegood overall. Van Wart was primarily an importer who supplied arms to the South, and his name is seen on many percussion pistols of the 1830s-60s. This is the first big double percussion we have seen with his nameupon it. Remember, the South was desperate for arms at the time of the Civil War and these shotguns were pressed into military service and this one would definitely keep the Yankees off your porch!
