American coffin-hilted and guardless Bowie knife with semi-spearpoint blade, measuring approx. 14-1/4” overall with nearly 9-3/8” blade. Blade measures nearly 1-1/2” across widest part. Blade is of thin steel measuring approx. 1/16” in width. The blade shows forge marks and some erosion and pitting, sharpening at the edge, forge cracks and use. The hilt is a darkened hard wood, probably rosewood, secured by six German silver pins. The grip scales are capped on each side of the blade with German silver covers secured by pins that have been nicely polished. The condition of the grip is very good with some minor aging, slight scratches, but generally very good overall. From a major Eastern collector of fine Bowie knifes who dates the knife from the 1830’s to early 40’s. Est: $1,500 - $3,000
