Antique American hand-wrought iron peel with rams horn handle, 18th century. Rams horns of this peel are extremely curled almost into a second circle, an awesome feat of hand-wrought iron making. A hole and edge damage of blade said by family lore to be the result of using the peel as a weapon during Indian wars of the early 18th C. Peel is 41 inches long. Its age speaks for itself. In as-found crusty surface after being unearthed in New England homestead remodeling excavation. Such peels were indispensable for hearth baking ovens in the 18th century, are favorites for fireplace accessories today.
