Unique and Finely Made 19th Century American Underlever Air Rifle, NSNV, approx. .28 cal., 21-1/2'' octagon barrel, 43'' overall, with 1-3/4'' diameter 7'' long air cylinder activated by single pump underlever triggerguard; blue finish, heat-colored Pennsylvania walnut stock with cheekpiece and similar forend, nickel silver buttplate, and underlever channel trim, as well as shield-type escutcheon at wrist. Only marking is the letter ''B'' to left side diagonal barrel flat near breech. Rifle is loaded by twisting breech open where it contacts air cylinder, inserting one .28 cal. ball into the smoothbore breech. Condition is very good. Barrel and air cylinder retain approx. 40%-50% toning blue. Stock and forend with light scuffs and scratches, with split at top of wrist. Gas cylinder does not set in the cocked position and requires some internal work. Certainly a unique and interesting early American oddity. Est.: $800-$1,200.
