American Revolutionary War Period Powder Horn, belonging to Noah Main from Plainfield, CT, ca. 1778, and dated Jan. 19, 1778AD. Embellished in the Folk style with the images of King George III and Queen Charlotte above the term ''Liberty is Fled'', and other images showing the English lion, a hunter and dog trailing a deer, a bird, the King and ministers, what appears to be a squirrel, and very lightly adorned with a period English sailing ship. Top portion with multiple panel border work and a hand-carved coin type edge. Bottom portion is plugged with pine which is held in place with round iron nails. Noah Main was born in Plainfield, CT in 1761, and was 17 years old at the time of his service in the Revolutationary War. This horn is definitely of the Revolutionary War period. The Connecticut Militia was engaged in nearly all of the early battles and skirmishes, including Lexington, Saratoga and Bunker Hill. Condition is fine to near excellent for its age with vivid images, showing some worming to unadorned side of horn, and one small triangular loss where end cap meets horn body.
