Fine American Renaissance Inlaid and Ebonized Rosewood and Gilt Bronze Mounted Credenza, late 19th century and attributed to the New York base cabinet maker Alexander Roux.

The cabinet has a stepped top with incurvate sides, over a cabinet mounted with finely painted porcelain plaques representing Michelangelo, Raphael and a Classical maiden. The panels have inlaid with cattails and wheat sheaves. Satinwood-lined interior of scalloped shelves, raised on a stepped blocked base with bracket feet.

The cabinet is in fine original condition. The measurements are height 54 inches, width 69 1/2 inches, depth 18 inches.

PS: The gilt bronze mounts on the stile capitals used in this example are identical to those used on a stamped cabinet by Alexander Roux at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see Tracy and Johnson, 19th century America, Furniture and Other Decorative Arts, pl. 164) and also found on another Roux cabinet at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (see D?Ambrosio, Masterpieces of American Furniture from the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, p. 107).
