<td width="100%">
American portrait painting of a woman seated in white wicker armchair reading a letter, signed by important woman artist Peggy Dodds, 1939. This pastel portrait depicts the sitter wearing a fabulous ostrich-feathered straw hat and holding a straw fan. Note the curlicues of the wicker armchair. This fascinating portrait exemplifies Dodds' mastery of color, form, and light in the pastel medium, for which she is a pre-eminent woman artist. Size, 23"W x 31-1/2"H. in white wooden molding frame. Portrait sitter is from a historically important New Jersey family, provenance will be given to purchaser. Portrait accompanied by paper documents. Peggy Dodds (1900-1987), a native of New Jersey, started exhibiting at the Montclair Art Museum in the 1920's. She won numerous prizes, exhibiting at the Whitney Museum, Salons of America, Independent Artists and others. She also was prominent in the Woodstock, NY art colony. Photos taken under glass, thus rather hazy and do not do justice to this splendid work. See our #167728 for a Peggy Dodds beautiful floral still life, with the same provenance. More photos available on request (we're allowed only 4 on this site).
