American Numismatic Rarities, LLC. with Spink. THE LOUIS E. ELIASBERG, SR. COLLECTION OF WORLD GOLD COINS AND MEDALS. April 18-19, 2005. 1-3623 Lots. 4to. This catalog presents numismatic material from Latin America and other Foreign countries and is primarily dedicated to the historic offering of world gold coinage and medals formed by Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; this sale is a virtual panorama of world gold coinage from early times to the modern era, with emphasis on the last several centuries. The sale provides something for everyone, as in his interest in forming a comprehensive cabinet the owner necessarily acquired the common along with the rare. The vast majority of the coins offered have been hidden away in a bank vault for a generation. In nearly all instances this will be the first occasion in the lifetime of anyone reading this catalogue that particular specimens have become available. While the catalogue listings speak for themselves, emphasis in particular is on gold coins of the Spanish dominions of Central and South America. Not only is the offering extensive, but the quality is often beyond compare, with lustrous examples of issues that are typically seen well worn, if at all. The foundation stone of the collection was the John H. Clapp collection of world gold coins, focusing on issues of Latin America. The Clapp collection of over 1,000 coins was formed in large part from the collections formed by Clapp's father, John M. Clapp, and the collection Harry F. Williams sold to Waldo C. Newcomer in 1918, which saw eventual dispersal via auction in 1935. Never before in the history of numismatics has such a comprehensive offering taken place, and given the time needed to assemble these pieces and their general availability now, the accomplishment will never be repeated. With this auction the coins pass from a former generation to the new. Also included in this catalog is the brief biography, 'Louis E. Elias berg, Sr. (1896-1976) A Legendary Collector'; color plated throughout, Gengerke [12]. Lot weight: 2 lbs 5oz. Subject(s): United States.
