American Milwaukee style percussion Shutzen rifle, silver mounted with select walnut stocks, circa about 1850-1870. The rifle is unsigned but of high quality. The barrel measures 32” and the rifle is approx 51-1/2”overall with a heavy octagon barrel of approx 41 caliber measuring approx 1-1/16” across the flats. The rifle weighs approx 16-3/4 lbs. The barrel shows a brown finish of which 75% remains drifting to a patina. The lockand butt plate and trigger guard show traces of silver plate which extends onto the mounts and hand engraved patchbox. The rifle shows a target type peep sight mounted in the tang and a hooded target type front sight. Alsoa fancy engraved and silvered side plate and screw off palm rest, very Germanic in styling. The double set triggers work perfectly and the bore is good, in generally very good condition overall. There has beenextensive research on these target rifles recently and it may be possible to attribute a manufacture by the somewhat odd characteristics. Est.; $1,500-$3,000.
