American Light Horse Saber, Justice Model 1840 Dragoon Saber and Non-Regulation Model 1840 Cavalry
This lot consists of three sabers: 1) "American Light Horse Saber:, 1785-1800, with cast brass lion-head pommel, grooved spiral pattern grip and divided guard. The 33-1/12 inch curved blade has a false edge and spear point. Both sides of the blade are stamped "AMERICAN LIGHT HORSE". 2) Regulation pattern Model 1840 Dragoon Saber with iron scabbard. The reverse ricasso is stamped "P.S. JUSTICE/PHILADA" in two lines. The saber has no U.S. property or inspection marks and was probably made for a state contract during the Civil War. 3) Non-Regulation, Soligen made Model 1840 pattern saber with curved, 32 inch flat-backed, double fuller blade. The blade is acid etched with an American Eagle and Shield, floral sprays and military trophies on the obverse and "U.S." flanked by military trophies and floral sprays on the reverse. The obverse ricasso is stamped with a Soligen, Knights head, makers mark. The reverse has a late 19th century "MADE IN GERMANY" export stamp. The saber has a regulation, enlisted pattern, brass, two branch guard, helmet pommel and leather wrapped grip with twisted brass wire. The saber does not have a scabbard.

1) The American Light Horse saber is in fair-good condition with a dark blade with age discoloration and moderate pitting. The markings are faint but legible. The hilt has a dark patina and is in good condition. 2) The Justice Model 1840 Dragoon saber has a very good blade with no pitting, clear markings and some age discoloration. The hilt is in fair condition, nearly all of the leather wrap is missing and the wire is loose. The iron scabbard has a brown patina with heavy pitting. 3) The non-regulation Model 1840 saber is in very good condition. The blade has most of the bright finish with with no pitting and scattered age spotting. The etched decoration is light but distinct. The brass guard has been polished but remains in very good condition. All of the leather grip cover and original twisted wire wrap remains intact.
