American Indian Batwing & Heart Cutout Dag Knife
This lot shows an unusual, artful cutout and sided-notched American Indian Dag Knife with paddle-style beaver back or beaver tail handle with file brandings. The piece shows a metal double edge blade, with beveled edge, median ridge running down the center of each side of the blade as well as double / four notch cuts and wonderful stylized batwing and weeping heart cutouts. The cutouts start near the tip with a weeping heart, then elongated diamond four-point morning star, stylized batwing like cutout, single circle spot and four notch cutouts. The handle has a beaver tail paddle-style single wood piece with dark color and is adorned with rasp blacksmith file branded / burned bands. The piece is incredibly similar to the example offered and sold for $10,000 at Sotheby’s Arts of the American West 2014 Sale from the Fred Crissman collection, showing the same spear lance-like tapering blade, batwing cutout, throwing knife shaped cutout, and double notch with paddle shaped grip. Also similar to the piece sold by NAAC in January 2021. Provenance: From a private Native American collection in Northern California. Measures overall 15.5”L with the blade being 10”L and the knife being overall 2.25”W. Total weight of 8 oz.*
