American Halfstock Percussion Sporting or Plains Rifle, NVSN, .36 cal., 39'' octagonal barrel with small German silver blade front and dovetailed buckhorn rear sights marked ''Wm. Stephens'' between rear sight and breech; serpentine iron lockplate is engraved with a waterbird and marsh scene behind hammer and marked ''G. Goulcher'' within an oval wreath; double set triggers; brass furniture including a fancy pierced sideplate, scrolled finger-rest triggerguard, and crescent buttplate with separate lower tang having a fancy top finial; varnished walnut halfstock with single barrel key and two German silver oval escutcheons, pewter forend cap, plain hickory ramrod retained by two iron ferrules. Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is very good+, the barrel having a smooth dark brown patina with deep black powder pitting at breech, the percussion bolster possibly a period replacement, the other iron parts a smooth gunmetal gray, the brass having light toning. Stock is solid and smooth retaining most of its original finish. Action is smooth and sure; bore is clean with deep rifling. This is just the type of plain but sturdy rifle that was carried by immigrants moving West. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
