This is a Montreal American Fur Co. (Hudson Bay Fur Co.) signed German silver early effigy gorget from circa 1680-1820 century from renowned silversmith, William Sylvester. The piece shows an early presentation clothe collar with star accents. The gorget is hallmarked various times, "MONTREAL WS". "WS" being the silversmith William Sylvester. William Sylvester was noted in the American Fur Company papers as providing “silverwork” according to the book “Silver In The Fur Trade 1680-1820” by Martha Wilson Hamilton. The American Fur Co. was associated with Hudson’s Bay Fur Co. and the North West Fur Trade Co. The piece shows two Otter figures mirroring one another and kissing. Each has a glass eye and shows museum quality condition. Scarcely seen kissing otters gorget. The piece is displayed in a glass top oak display case that is 18"x24" and 2 1/8" thick. Gorget is 4.25"x6 1/8". Presentation collar and gorget are overall 22.25"x17.25". A picture of the mention of William Sylvester in the book is shown. Exceedingly rare.
