Constant Mayer A.N.A.(1829-1911 is noted as an Important American painter . He was born in France and was a pupil of Cogniet. He came to New York and became a naturalized American citizen in 1857. Among his best known sitters were Union generals U.S. Grant and Philip Sheridan. He is noted and recorded as a Genre and portrait painter(Prominent Men). Mayer's works can be found in Museums and Important Private collections.

Framed in its period Museum masterpiece water gilt wood frame. I am unsure of the sitter in this painting but since Mayer only painted Prominent men all of whom were Important Public American figures at the time of our history. The oil is signed and dated bottom right hand corner. The painting reveals a fine interior among the back ground of the gentleman who is sitting and reading. Objects in the room consist of art work, periodicals, journals, and specifically documents, one in which Mayer has even gone to the extent and detail of showing writing and words, possibly noting and important document from American history relating to the figure in this portrait. Many of his subjects were high ranking military figures as well as politicians.
