American Eagle: Mid-19th Century Serving Dish
American Eagle: Stunning, Large Mid-19th Century Lidded Serving Dish. Quite simply, one of the most beautiful examples of 19th century patriotic china we have ever seen! An animated eagle with gold leaf highlights forms the lid's finial, standing on patriotic shield and arrows. The green and gold leaf ivy decoration is so well rendered as to almost appear three-dimensional. The handles are in a lovely openwork form, and the entire piece is highlighted with a great deal of dramatic gold leaf trim. A maker's mark on underside of bowl and lid identifies it as the product of a Staffordshire firm "For American Exhibition 1853." One might speculate that it was created as a one-of-a-kind showpiece, as the quality really seems too high for a mass-produced item. Formerly in the personal collection of renowned specialist Rex Stark who purchased it from the estate of the equally respected collector Paul Richards. Choice condition. Length 11.25". Height 8.25".

Shipping: Hollowware/Pottery/Glass, Large (view shipping information)
