American Eagle Hilt Sabre,<p>circa 1830-40. Not marked, but in the style of F.W. Widman of Philadelphia. Hilt parts of gilded brass, the pommel a "weeping" eagle, with carved bone grip, and elaborately cast knucklebow and planchette of a relief eagle. The blade, with an unstoppered 3/4 fuller, acid etched and blued, and decorated with a Liberty Cap and Pole, Shield-breasted American Eagle, and a banner proclaiming "E Pluribus Unum" on one side, with floral and geometric motifs on the other. Total length of sword 38.5" With its original leather scabbard, with top mount of gilded brass.<p>Blade with generous amounts of original bluing and gilt highlights remaining. Gilding on hilt about 75%. Scabbard lacking drag and about the last 1.5" of leather.
