American Colonial Militia Musket, ca. 1750, .75 cal., 50'' barrel, brown finish, full-length walnut stock, Brown Bess type club butt, with unmarked contoured lockplate, cast brass triggerguard, and four-thimble type brass ramrod sleeves, with additional brass side and buttplate, and correct steel button-head ramrod, clearly of American construction. This musket is consistent with the known type used during the French & Indian and American Revolutionary Wars. This musket has been examined by noted Revolutionary War arms author George Neumann, who stated that it was assembled from parts imported to the Colonies during the mid-1700s, with early banana-style lockplate of commercial mfg. with no external bridle, probably of Dutch or Germanic origin. English triggerguard, French or English made barrel, with American cast brass buttplate in the English style. Stock and brass sideplate are of American mfg. as well. Mr. Neumann further states that this early Militia musket were the correct type found at the earliest Revolutionary War battlefields. Along with a Colonial period mid- to late 18th Century shooting bag. Condition is very good with overall plum darkening to barrel, pitting to side of lockplate and near breech area. Stock with several well-accomplished repairs. Action functions as designed. Condition to shooting bag is fine as mfg'd from multi-piece leather. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (Antique)
