With lock scroll engraved, "Ketland & Co. (circa 1750 approximately). Measures 42" 75 cal bbl showing crossed key and crown proof. Plain grain American walnut stock with paddle or "club butt" and plain brass mounts. Incised shell carving at back of tang. Metal surfaces are very good with matching dark brown to black patina along with fairly smooth metal showing slight pitting mainly at firing areas. The wood is very good plus with minor chips and small losses around the look but exceptional overall. The frizzen was relined during use and the springs is weak. However, all original plus uncleaned. Mounts show a natural light honey colored patina. A classic American gun that could have been militia used or also as a sporting gun. A classic form. Note: Newman's Encyclopedia of the American Revolution illustrates identical butt plate on page 213. Ill# 25. Also similar club butts are illustrated page 125, Ill# 5&6, identified as Hudson Valley 1720-1750.
