Earhart looks as if joy itself would let her take flight! This uncommon pose shows not only the jubilant aviatrix but also the engine and propellor of the Lockheed Vega that she used to set the women’s world record of flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932—almost five years to the month after Charles Lindbergh. She accomplished her goal on May 20-21, after taking off from Newfoundland. Rapidly changing weather condition, a broken altimeter, and a gasoline nearly ended her flight—not to mention her life—but she flew on, further avoiding disaster by pulling out of a deadly spin and overcoming flames that shot from her exhaust manifold. Her 15 hour and 18 minute flight concluded when she safely landed on the coast of Ireland—2,026 miles later. For her accomplishment, she was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (the first woman to be so honored) and the National Geographic Society Medal.
