Rare vintage glossy 10 x 8 photo of Earhart posing under the nose of her Lockheed Electra with Fred Noonan, Albert Paul Mantz, and Harry Manning, just before leaving on her final attempt to circumnavigate the world. Signed in fountain pen by all four. Beautifully preserved and in fine condition, with some scattered light creasing, mostly to borders.

All the key players are here—all those who, initially at least, were on board, both figuratively and literally, for Earhart’s planned 1937 around-the-world flight. There’s Mantz, a Hollywood stunt pilot who served as a technical advisor; there’s Noonan and Manning, her navigators; and of course, there’s Earhart herself. On March 17, the quartet took off from Wheeler Field in Oakland, California, where this image had been captured, on the first leg of their journey. A technical malfunction forced the crew to land in Hawaii and the plane was shipped back to California for repairs. On June 1, Earhart and Noonan would depart Miami, heading eastward over the South Atlantic; on July 2 they took off from New Guniea…and then they were gone. Their disappearance, and presumed death, have captivated historians ever since. The first such signed photo of its type that we have ever encountered, and an aviation item of noteworthy desirability and rarity!
