TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, Hearst’s International combined with Cosmopolitan letterhead, September 11, 1929. Letter to a collector who is recovering from an illness. In full: “I am very glad to send you a note to add to your collection of autographs. During the war I worked in a hospital and I know the tedium of staying in one a long time. May I hope that you will recover and be able to meet some of the people whose signatures you have collected?” In fine condition, with some light edge toning, and a few strokes of signature light, but legible, due to irregular ink flow. Earhart served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse at a military hospital until the Armistice in November 1918. It was there that she saw the result of four years' of war: men without arms and legs, men who were paralyzed or blind, and her compassion for hospitalized victims is clearly conveyed here.
