Commemorative air mail cover with a cachet honoring Earhart embarking on the first official T.A.T. Flight from Port Columbus on July 8, 1929, signed over the cachet in black ink. Envelope bears a typed address for H. J. Walk in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as a July 8, 1929, Columbus, Ohio, postal cancellation. In fine condition, with a uniform block of toning over most of the panel from previous display.
On July 8, 1929, Earhart was among the 19 people who arrived in Ohio as part of the inaugural westbound trip of the Transcontinental Air Transport (T.A.T.) air-rail New York-to-Los Angeles intercontinental route. The site of a transportation hub in the Ohio city was personally endorsed by Charles Lindbergh, who saw it as a vital link for coast-to-coast, rail-to-air travel. The official opening of Port Columbus made it the eastern transfer point for T.A.T. passengers traveling cross-country. After leaving New York City by train the evening of July 7, the party arrived at Port Columbus Station the next morning. Two three-engine transport planes took them to Oklahoma where they transferred to another train for the third leg of their advertised 48-hour journey. Desirable signature of the famed aviatrix as she once again made history.
