Painter and sculptor (1884–1920) who had to struggle against poverty and chronic ill health, dying of tuberculosis and excesses of drink and drugs at the age of 35. Signed book: Memini: Album Poetique. Paris: Delachaux and Niestle. Hardcover, 4.25 x 6.25. Signed inside in pencil on the July 12th entry, his birthdate, “Amedeo Modigliani.” Book is also signed inside in ink or pencil by some of Modigliani’s family and friends, and also bears a 1980 attestation of authenticity by Renato Saggiori on the second free end page. Mild uniform toning to all pages, several other small notations to opening pages, small label affixed to inside opening page, tape reinforcement along front hinge, light wear to boards and spine, and some light fraying to head and tail of spine, otherwise fine condition.

This book provided the reader with a ‘poem of the day’ entry for each day of the year, with Modigliani and others signing on the anniversary of their special occasion. Born into a Jewish family in the Italian port city of Livorno, Modigliani was perhaps influenced by the wondrous Italian architecture, eventually moving to France, where he built his reputation as a figurative artist known for a modern style characterized by mask-like faces and elongated forms. His death at such a young age and his desirability as a creative genius makes his signature extremely rare.
