Union General Ambrose Burnside autograph letter signed and additionally initialed ''AEB'', dated 15 February 1865 from Providence. Letter is addressed to Brevet Brigadier General James Lyman Van Buren, who served with the 53rd regiment of New York. Here, Burnside offers Van Buren full support in a promotion. Reads in full: ''My dear Col / I learn that some of your friends are to make application for your promotion to a Brig General or a [?] in order that you may have immediate command of troops in the field -- you know how much pleasure it would afford me to learn of your announcement -- Both our personal relations, and my faith in your ability as an officer lead me to wish you success -- At all times, and under all circumstances you have shown such faithfulness, efficiency and gallantry as have soon [?] for you my warmest friendship and perfect confidence -- I sincerely hope you will receive such advancement as will enable you to receive a command of a brigade or at least a regiment. Sincerely yours -- A.E.Burnside / Maj Genl''. With a postscript on page three of card-style letter reading: ''If I can serve you any way you must not hesitate to call upon me, or refer to me -- AEB''. 7.75'' x 9.75'' letter has a circular ''E.H. Owen'' watermark at top left. In very good condition with a 2.5'' tear at top fold affecting a few words.
