American writer (1842–c.1914) best known for his vivid short stories (including the classic ‘An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge’) and his satirical ‘The Devil’s Dictionary.’ In 1913, while traveling with Pancho Villa’s troops during the Mexican Revolution, Bierce disappeared; his ultimate fate remains a mystery. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.75 x 7.75, August 22, 1892. Letter to his publisher, F. J. Schulte, in full: "I suppose you sent me the enclosed proofs merely to show the style of the work (which I approve) but if you care to have me read all the proofs I will do so. Evidently you are going to have something unique in bookfacture. I have had a talk with Dr. Danziger and there are now no differences between us anent the book, and I hope he'll remain at anchor until struck by an uncommonly tempestuous idea." In fine condition. The work in question is 1892's The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter, which was the only novel collaborated on with author Adolphe Danziger. Pre-certified PSA/DNA.
