Amazing-Man Comics #5 Mile High pedigree
The first superhero to debut in his own title was not Superman or Batman but Amazing-Man, and #5 was the first issue of the series! This issue has the origin and first appearance of Bill Everett's character, hitting stands a month before Marvel Comics #1 with the premiere of Everett's other early superhero the Sub-Mariner! The fact that Carl Burgos and Tarpe Mills also contributed to the issue tells us that it was produced by the Funnies Inc. shop; in fact, it has been speculated that the numbering was continued from the never-distributed Motion Picture Funnies Weekly (you may recall that #2-4 of that series do exist as covers though not as finished comics). Centaur Publications' entire output is difficult to find, this book especially so -- Overstreet and Gerber both rate this issue as "rare." By the way, for all those who claim that Ant-Man was preceded by the Atom and that Doll Man preceded both of them... all true, but all of those shrinking superheroes were preceded by Minimidget, who also debuts here. This issue is ranked among the 50 most valuable comics by Overstreet, and it's by far the most valuable Centaur comic, thus the Mile High you see here would have to stand as the most desirable copy of any Centaur! Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $25,000. CGC census 12/06: 2 in 9.4, none higher.

Shipping: Comics - Slabbed (certified) (view shipping information)
