Amador Co., CA 1889
Incorporated in London. Ert. #119, issued to Bertram Lisle, October 30, 1889 for 4 shares. Signed by Secretary James Meighan and by 2 directors. No vignette. Uncancelled. Light blue border and print, embossed seal, on crème paper. 8 x 10,” trimmed tight at left. The property was originally known as the Amador Gold Mine when it was purchased by A.P. Minnear. Minnear was born in 1828 in Randolph County, Virginia, but came west and developed into a true entrepreneur primarily working in lumbering, hauling and mining ventures in Idaho and California. He purchased the mine for $20,000 and then spent about $300,000 more of his own money and other people’s on improvements. His son John I. Minnear was hired as superintendent. “A.P….went directly to London and sold the property for $1,250,000, part cash and part stock. It was organized in London under the name of ‘Amador Gold Mine, Limited.’ It continued John I. Minear (sic) as its superintendent, at $500 a month, who is now in charge of the property and enjoys a fine reputation as a mining and business man. The younger brother, W.C., has charge of the machinery for John I., but is now in partnership with Jo. Catlow in southern Oregon, raising fine horses….From the Idaho Weekly Avalanche of August 31, 1889, we learn that Mr. Minear built the first telegraph line through that Territory from the State of Nevada to Washington Territory, 500 to 600 miles long, at a time when everything was expensive. It cost about $100,000” [Ref:files.usgwarchives.net/ca/amador/bios/minnear885bs.txt].
